Back Pain: When Should You See a Spine Specialist?

Back pain is extremely common and often resolves with rest and conservative care. However, certain symptoms indicate it's time to see a spine specialist.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Pain lasting more than 4-6 weeks despite rest and home care
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs
  • Pain following a fall or injury
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control (seek immediate care)
  • Pain that worsens at night or with rest

Common Causes of Back Pain

Causes range from muscle strain and poor posture to more serious conditions like herniated discs, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease.

Treatment Approaches

Most back pain responds to physiotherapy, posture correction and activity modification. For persistent or severe cases, minimally invasive spine surgery can provide lasting relief.
